Two Ways to Wire a Car: One Vendor, Two Philosophies
I manage purchasing for a mid-sized Tier 1 automotive supplier. We process around 60-80 orders annually for wiring components — from simple sensor pigtails to complex harnesses for prototype vehicles. For years, I thought a cable was a cable. Leoni Infiniti (Pre-assembled, Standardized): These are catalog items. You pick from a list of standard lengths, connector types, and pin configurations. Lead time? Leoni C300 (Custom Assembled per Spec): This is the build-to-order route. You send them a drawing or a BOM, they build it. Lead time? Anywhere from 8 to 16 weeks, depending on the complexity of the tooling. Dimension 2: Total Cost (Not Just the Unit Price)
This is where administrative buyers often get fooled. The unit price on a C300 assembly might look competitive — until you add everything up.
Infiniti: Price includes the connector, the cable, and the overmold. No setup fees. No NRE (Non-Recurring Engineering). You can get a price quote in one email. Based on my 2024 orders, a standard Infiniti 2-meter cable with a sealed connector ran roughly $18-25 per unit at quantities of 500.
C300: Base cable cost might be lower for high volumes. But you're paying for:
- Engineering time: Building the spec sheet (can be a few hundred dollars for simple variants).
- Tooling: Custom dies or cut lengths might have a one-off fee of $500-2000.
- Testing: Validation of the assembly (often passed to you, the buyer, as a line item).
- Rush fees: If you need it faster than the standard 8-12 weeks, you're looking at a 25-50% premium. (I found this out the hard way.)
The most frustrating part? These hidden costs don't always show up on the first quote. You'd think a vendor would be transparent, but interpretation of "what's included" varies wildly.
Verdict: For standard needs, Infiniti is cheaper total cost. For custom needs, C300 is unavoidable — but the sticker shock is real if you haven't factored in the hidden expenses.
Dimension 3: Quality Consistency & Traceability
This one surprised me. I assumed custom-built would be higher quality because it's "bespoke." Turns out, the opposite is often true.
Infiniti: These are built on an automated line. The termination, the overmolding, the final test — it's all automated. Every single unit is tested for continuity and hi-pot. The failure rate on what we received? Less than 0.1%. And if there's an issue, Leoni can trace the production batch back to the exact operator and machine shift. (So glad I insisted on this line item in our contract. Almost went with a generic catalog, which would have given us zero traceability.)
C300: These are assembled more manually, even if by skilled technicians. The assembly process itself is documented, but the human element means variation. A connector seating might be slightly shallower on one end. A cable tie might be cinched a little tighter. Not defects, but inconsistencies. It's a lesson learned the hard way: consistency is a feature, not a given.
Verdict: For mission-critical applications where every unit must be identical (think: airbag triggers, brake sensors), Infiniti's automation is unbeatable. For prototyping where you care about function over form, C300 is perfectly fine.
Which One Should You Order?
Here's my practical rule of thumb after processing about 30 orders from Leoni over the last two years:
- Choose Leoni Infiniti if: You have a standard application, you don't need custom connectors, and your lead time is flexible but must be certain. It's the safer, cheaper, and more reliable choice for production.
- Choose Leoni C300 if: You are in the prototype phase, you need a non-standard length or connector, or you're building less than 100 units of a specific design. It's the flexible choice, but you're trading cost and lead time certainty for customizability.
Don't try to force one solution into the other's job. Using a C300 line for a mass-production order is wasteful. Using Infiniti for a one-off test rig is frustrating (they won't have the exact connector you need).
The right question to ask yourself isn't "Which is better?" — it's "What is the job to be done?"
Is it a repeatable production run? Standard Infiniti. Is it a custom prototype? C300. Simple.
